- Do you know your place?Description: Do you now your Place
We envision a web-based game which lets multiple players challenge their local geographic knowledge. The players have the task to find the locations of given place names. As additional task, they might want to add new tasks to the current map view to challenge other players. Achieving tasks results in points, with the ultimate goal of having most points in a particular region. From a theoretical point of view we want to learn about the local place names, which we can re-use in gazetteers or even navigation environments.
- Mapping the HistoryDescription: Mapping the History
The German Bundesarchiv (Federal Archiv) recently donated hundreds of thousands of historical images to wikimedia commons. A good part of them show images of our world, e.g. the ruins after WWII. In contrary to artistic or touristic photos published on websites like Yahoo Flickr, the historical documents of the past are usually not annotated with a geographic location. This lack of a spatial reference makes it impossible to find these photos using specific spatial query tools or just a map. In this thesis we expect the implementation of a website which enables users to perform the spatial (and, if needed, the temporal) annotation of the photos. They should be able to simply drag historical photos from Wikimedia Commons on a map (and, if needed, on a timeline). In addition, user should be able to browse through the collections of pictures using either the map or a timeline, and to see all images (placed on the map) which have been taken during this time in the selected region.
